Mile 1
Alright, in case you hadn’t figured out the wordplay of our road trip title; it’s not as morbid as you think. But perhaps it may be, you be the judge? As a person living with ALS, I am in fact dying from it, then again, no one is immortal. You’ve heard the term, “dead man walking”, well for obvious reasons, I simply can’t walk. Thus the play on words, I am in fact on wheels. I am still alive, therefore the “live tour”!
Today, after weeks of planning: itineraries, checklists, supplies, concepts for engaging others with ALS and so forth, we departed. Yes late in the day, later than anticipated. It matters not, Meg actually prefers to drive at night. Soon we leave San Antonio behind and hit the open road. The day gives way to salmon hued translucent skies. The glare from windshields transitions to the glare of headlights as the miles pass.
We listen to a book, our favorite road trip activity. The plot as windy as the road. We anticipate the characters next move and as if the author knows we are driving, the story unfolds like the highway before us. After a few hours we stop to refuel, the RV and us.
After a meal of truck stop meatloaf, and yes it was actually very good, we press forward. Our objective, get a few more miles in and find a rest stop. Two hours later we are tucked in between two semi’s and soon after we are saying our goodnights.
